The Fifty-Sixth Annual Catalogue of the Packer Collegiate Institute, Joralemon and Livingston Streets, Between Clinton and Court Streets, Brooklyn, New York, 1909.
The Packer Collegiate Institute was opened for the admission of students on the 9th day of November, 1854. It stands upon the site previously occupied by the Brooklyn Female Academy. That school had been organized by public-spirited citizens in 1845, but its career was ended by the burning of its building on the last day of December, 1852. Immediately after the fire, Mrs. Harriet L. Packer gave sixty-five thousand dollars for the erection of a new building in memory of her husband, and, on the 19th day of March, 1853, a special charter was obtained from the Legislature incorporating the Packer Collegiate Institute.
