Lees-McRae College had its beginning in a small summer day school as a mission work under the care of the Concord Presbytery of North Carolina, before the close of the last century. In 1900 the first dormitory was opened, accommodating a few girls, and one teacher. In 1907 it was incorporated as Lees-McRae Institute, the girls' department located at Banner Elk, North Carolina, and the boys' department at Plumtree, North Carolina. After a fire at Plumtree in 1926, the boys' and girls' departments were consolidated at Banner Elk.
